Compact Entry Also Sets Monthly Sales Record
The best-selling crossover in the country last month was the 2014 Honda CR-V, as the award-winning compact CUV delivered 28,485 units, grew sales by 7.4 percent and set an all-time volume record for the month of April. Being king of the crossover hill has taken on fresh importance in recent months, too, as the latest data from Polk indicates the compact crossovers now make up the largest vehicle segment in the marketplace. (H/t to The Truth About Cars for that factoid.)
But beyond the 2014 Honda CR-V, the brand also did pretty well in the car categories anyway; it had the No. 2 sellers in both the compact and midsize segments, with the 2014 Honda Civic and Accord. The former grew sales by 4.4 percent in April, with 27,611 deliveries, while the latter managed a 1.7 percent growth rate, on 34,124 sales. With that trio doing the honors, Honda had more vehicles on the April top-10 sales leaderboard than any other brand:
But while Honda's Big Three had a very solid month in terms of volume, the Honda brand's April total of 118,334 sales marked a bump of just 1.1 percent as compared to April 2013—and an overall industry growth rate of just over 8 percent. Still, sales are expected to begin heating up in the near-term future, according to Jeff Conrad, Honda division senior vice president and general manager.
Commented Conrad: "After a few truly chilling winter months, it's great to see the warmer spring weather begin to liberate our customers and spark record sales of CR-V and solid sales results across the lineup. More than any other automaker our success is based on one customer at a time going down to their Honda dealer to purchase a new vehicle, and in April, we see the power of our retail sales strategy at work."
