Audi skipped the 2013 model year for the R8 and instead went ahead with introducing the new 2014 model, which went on sale this week. The 2014 R8 brings forth some changes including a tweaked exterior, new wheels, available diamond-stitched leather, and a new a new seven-speed S Tronic dual-clutch transmission with larger shift paddles. “The launch of the R8 represented the turning point of the Audi brand and placed luxury on notice. The 2014 R8 will continue to build upon that success for our halo sports car and for the Audi brand as a whole,” said Scott Keogh, President Audi of America in a statement.
The 2014 R8 lineup begins with the 4.2L V8 engine making 430 horsepower and 316 pound-feet of torque. Prices start at $114,900 for the coupe and $128,400 for the spyder. (Note: Prices don’t include a $1,250 destination charge and a $3,000 gas guzzler tax.) Next is the R8 V10 which packs a 5.2L V10 engine that produces 525 horsepower and 391 pound-feet of torque. The R8 V10 begins at $151,200 for the coupe and $164,700 for the spyder. Finally is the new R8 V10 plus model. Offered only in a coupe, the V10 Plus takes the 5.2L V10 engine and squeezes a bit more power out it. How much? 550 horsepower and 398 pound-feet of torque. The run to 60 MPH takes about 3.3 seconds and can reach a top speed of 198 MPH.
The V10 Plus model is also lighter than the standard V10 model by using ceramic brakes, carbon fiber side blades, front splitter, rear diffuser, and spoiler. There is also a smaller fuel tank, manual seats, and reduced sound insulation in the engine bay. Pricing begins at $170,545.
