You might have heard of Subaru Rally Team USA and Vermont Sportscar. Not only do driver David Higgins and owner/operator Lance Smith appear on the smash hit web series Launch Control, but the pair are also responsible for setting back to back records at the Isle of Man TT in streetable STIs, taken home the overall championship in Rally America every year since 2011; and after taking the win at the recent Oregon Trail Rally it looks like there will be fourth trophy coming soon.
The racecar that David Higgins drives, built by Vermont Sportscar, is not as different from the STI sitting in your local Subaru showroom. Thanks to Subaru's history building safe All Wheel Drive vehicles for the street have always made them great candidates for winning rallys. Acording to Lance Smith, the lack of enhancements and modifications required to transform a roadgoing STI into an all out rally car is one of the main reasons that they run Subarus. Of all the racecars you see competing in everything from stage rally to Global Rally Cross, Subaru's representatives retain the most of what makes a Subaru a Subaru. Whereas certain cars are chopped and hacked beyond recognition, Subarus come with almost everything they need right from the factory.
So what does this hold for the future of Subaru Rally cars with the 2015 STI fast approaching? If both David Higgins and Lance Smit seem impressed, we should be thrilled!
