Automobile Information Disclosure Act

The Automobile Information Disclosure Act (AIDA), 15 U.S.C. §§ 1231-1233, is more commonly known as the Monroney Act after Senator Mike Monroney, who was the chief sponsor of the act. The act requires all new vehicles available for purchase must include a sticker affixed to the window indicating Manufacturer's Suggest Retail Price (MSRP), a list of installed optional equipment, transportation charges, EPA mileage rating, and crash safety information.

The typical enforcement of the Monroney Act is no more than a warning letter to the dealership in question, but removal or alteration of the sticker prior to sale is a criminal act, and can be punishable by up to $200,000 in fines and/or one year in prison. The act is enforced by the Office of Consumer Litigation, which is part of the Civil Division of the U.S. Department of Justice.
