The 2015 Infiniti Q70 recently earned the Top Safety Pick+ designation from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), joining a surprisingly short list of premium entries that have received that honor.

Now, part of that does have to do with the IIHS putting its focus on testing mainstream vehicles, so a number of possible rivals to the 2015 Infiniti Q70 simply haven't gone through the full gamut of Institute testing yet. But whatever the reason, the 2015 Infiniti Q70 currently is one of just five Top Safety Pick+ choices in the Institute's "Large luxury cars" category, along with the 2014 Acura RLX, 2015 Hyundai Genesis, 2015 Mercedes-Benz E-Class and 2014 Volvo S80.

Also notable: The 2015 Infiniti Q70 aced all five components of the IIHS crash-testing regimen and received the highest possible grades even in the small front-overlap evaluation. That test looks to measure occupant protection when a vehicle strikes a narrow obstacle, like a tree or pole, with the impact coming near the front corner, where typical safety structures aren't always effective.

For the final Top Safety Pick+ requirement—front crash-prevention technology—the 2015 Infiniti Q70 makes the grade with available driver-assistance features like:

  • Predictive Forward Collision Warning
  • Around View Monitor
  • Moving Object Detection
  • Backup Collision Intervention
  • Forward Emergency Braking
  • Lane Departure Warning and Prevention
  • Blind Spot Warning and Intervention

Said Michael Bartsch, vice president, Infiniti Americas: "Infiniti is very pleased that the Q70 performed well in the small overlap protection test earning it the prestigious 2014 IIHS Top Safety Pick+ award. Infiniti has worked hard to incorporate technology into all of its vehicles that not only make the driving experience more dynamic, but also help make driving safer for both the driver and passengers. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety's recognition of these efforts only serves to bolster our commitment to be leaders in this field."

(Note: The Top Safety Pick+ rating also applies to the 2014 Infiniti Q70 and its predecessor, the 2014 Infiniti M.)
