A funny thing happened to the Kia Soul upon its arrival on the market. The model was originally intended to be something of a halo car for the Kia brand to attract a younger buyer to the marque. Kia’s marketing team even corralled an incredibly talented group of hip-hop hamsters to promote the ride. (Given the size of those hamsters, it’s a good thing they were good-natured too—but we digress.) If you’ve seen a Soul on the road lately, and there are more than a few of them out there, you’ll see those rappin’ hamsters found an audience among, shall we say, “older?” people. You see, like hip-hop, the Soul absolutely transcends color. Nearly everyone you see driving the Kia has grey hair. And, for good reason. It’s a solid car with a wealth of standard features and it’s—there’s really no other way to say it— cute. For the 2014 model year, Kia reworked the car a bit. Revisions to the 2.0-liter engine made it feel a bit peppier. While the rest of the Soul exhibits more refinement, nicer interior materials, more cargo capacity, and the new face of Kia—the tiger nose grille insert.
