New Ohio Plant for Acura NSX Opening Next Year
Customers who prefer buying vehicles that are made in the United States should be happy to hear this: A 2014 Honda Accord just became the 20 millionth vehicle manufactured in this country by American Honda.
Of course, Hidenobu Iwata was plenty happy as well. According to the president and CEO of Honda of America Mfg. and head of Honda's North American manufacturing: "We are deeply aware that our ability to reach this milestone results from the trust that 20 million customers have placed in our products, and we appreciate their support over the past three decades. We also value the commitment made by tens of thousands of associates at Honda and our hundreds of suppliers in the U.S. who build products of the highest quality for our customers."
It also was particularly fitting that vehicle No. 20,000,000 was built at the automaker's facility in Marysville, Ohio. That happens to be home base for Honda's U.S. manufacturing efforts and, before building that benchmark 2014 Honda Accord, the Marysville team had assembled some 11.4 million other Hondas since it opened in 1982. Today, Honda has four U.S. manufacturing plants churning out product, including:
Those facilities, which also manufacture vehicles for Honda's lux division, Acura, combined for 1,309,917 units in 2013, setting an all-time record for the automaker's U.S. manufacturing operations and increasing 7.4 percent over the previous production record, set in 2012. Needless to say, Honda doesn’t plan on slowing down its U.S. manufacturing any time soon. In fact, the automaker already has broken ground on a new facility, also in Marysville, that will be the global production source of the all-new Acura NSX supercar—expected some time next year.
(Note: Honda also has an extensive U.S. manufacturing footprint for its powertrain components with the company reporting it had built 23.77 million engines and 18.64 million transmissions in this country so far.)
