Spark Remains No. 1 City Car in the United States
The 2014 Chevy Spark—a modest success here in the United States—now has something to brag about on the international stage: Late last month, the 1-millionth current-generation Spark rolled off the assembly line at Chevrolet’s plant in Changwon, South Korea.
“This is an important milestone that demonstrates how GM is rolling out products that our customers truly want,” said Sergio Rocha, president and CEO of GM Korea. “The Spark has contributed to the growth of the Chevrolet brand around the world with its innovative design and practicality and the highest level of safety in its segment.”
In fact, the international popularity of the 2014 Chevy Spark was enough to nudge the brand’s global sales up by about 0.6 percent during the third quarter of this year, and that, in turn, was enough to extend Chevrolet’s ongoing streak of quarterly sales records to 12. Which includes, for the most recent quarter, from July-September 2013, some 1.25 million deliveries in more than 140 countries around the world.
“Chevrolet is focused on delivering technologies and features in every vehicle that add value and enhance the vehicle ownership experience,” said Alan Batey, senior vice president of Global Chevrolet. “In the third quarter we were able to attract more consumers to the brand thanks in large part to the launches of several new vehicles including the Corvette, Silverado, and Spark EV.”
A little closer to home, the 2014 Chevy Spark is doing its part by continuing to increase sales even in a challenging and competitive marketplace. In September 2013, for example, when there were two fewer selling days than in the same month in 2012, the Spark still managed to serve up a 5.9 percent gain on the strength of 2,355 deliveries. To put that performance into context, the Scion iQ and Smart ForTwo sold fewer than a 1,000 units—combined—last month, while even the Fiat 500 finished slightly behind the Spark, with 2,126 sales.
