Refreshed Midsize Sedan Earns Top Honors from NHTSA
Although the 2014 Chevy Malibu received an extensive update over the 2013 model—itself all-new when introduced—engineers didn’t mess with success. Thus, despite its many changes, the current Malibu has retained its 5-Star Overall Vehicle Score from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). Chevy’s midsize entry earned 5 stars for occupant protection in both frontal-crash and side-crash testing, and also achieved a 4-star grade when evaluated for rollover protection.
The 2014 Chevy Malibu also offers all three of NHTSA’s “recommended technologies,” including a rearview camera system, lane-departure warning and forward collision alert, then complements those technologies with side blind-zone and rear cross-traffic alerts, as well as a six-month trial subscription to GM’s OnStar service.
It’s all part of the plan, according to Gay Kent, GM’s general director of Vehicle Safety and Crashworthiness: “Safety is an increasingly important consideration for new vehicle buyers, especially for those in the midsize segment. The customer is at the center of our day-to-day operations and when we design vehicles, it’s their safety that we have in mind.”
