Time for a pop quiz everyone. Here is your question: What does the 2013 Volkswagen Beetle Convertible have that no other convertible does? The answer is the option of a 2.0L turbocharged four-cylinder diesel engine.

Yes, you read that correctly.

Volkswagen is the only automaker to offer a diesel in a convertible. The 2.0L turbodiesel engine produces 140 horsepower and 236 pound-feet of torque. You have the choice of either a six-speed manual or DSG dual-clutch automatic transmission. EPA rates the Beetle TDI Convertible at 28 City/41 Highway for the manual and 28 City/37 Highway for the automatic. Diesel not your forte in a convertible? Volkswagen does offer a 2.5L five-cylinder (170 horsepower and 177 pound-feet) and a 2.0L turbocharged four-cylinder (200 horsepower and 207 pound-feet). Pricing for the Beetle TDI starts at $27,895 and includes a power-folding top, touchscreen radio with HD Radio, three months of Sirius Satellite Radio, trip computer, and keyless access with push-button start. For $28,995 you can step up to the Sound and Navigation model which adds a Fender Premium audio system and navigation. The DSG adds about $1,100 to the prices listed. Competitors for the Volkswagen Beetle Convertible TDI include the Fiat 500C and Mini Cooper Convertible.
