TO THE POINT What’s New? The 2005 Jeep Grand Cherokee is completely redesigned this year, with only a V8 engine and basic design and engineering philosophies carried over from the old model.
Selling Points: True off-roading capability, powerful Hemi V8, dramatically improved front seats
Deal Breakers: Small cargo space, glossy interior materials, tight rear seat leg room, poor fuel economy with V8 engines
Our Advice: Totally redesigned for 2005, the Jeep Grand Cherokee is more refined but has lost some of the moxie that made it so cool, rendering it a bland, overpriced and undersized SUV.

Click to enlarge. 2006 Jeep Grand Cherokee FAQs Jeep says quality is much improved, but at the same time the warranty coverage is reduced for 2006. Hmmmm…

The Jeep Grand Cherokee has not enjoyed a long track record of reliability. Should I be concerned about the new model, especially since it just got a redesign? According to DaimlerChrysler, warranty repairs on the Jeep Grand Cherokee have dropped a whopping 60 percent over the past five years, which is a good sign of improved quality. And with the 2005 Grand Cherokee’s impressive seven-year, 70,000-mile powertrain warranty, it seems the company has confidence in the product. However, for 2006, that warranty drops to three years and 36,000 miles. You might want to consider an extended warranty.

I need a roomy vehicle for my family and everybody’s stuff. Should I consider a Grand Cherokee? Honestly, the Grand Cherokee is not a roomy vehicle. In fact, in practical use it doesn’t feel much bigger than a Ford Escape or Honda CR-V. So if towing and four-wheeling are not in your family’s future, you might wish to consider one of these less expensive models.

If the Jeep Grand Cherokee isn’t very roomy inside, why is it so expensive? You’re paying for the engineering and hardware that goes into it for Trail Rated capability. Few SUVs on the market today can tread where a Jeep Grand Cherokee can, and you’re going to help pay for that privilege – even if you’re buying a Laredo 2WD V6 to bop around town in.
