It’s a tough nut to crack, getting a fuel cell vehicle to operate the same way as a car powered by a gas-burning engine. Until recently, the size and weight of the fuel cell and the tank has meant that fuel cell vehicles were cumbersome, with poor performance, cold weather starting problems, short range and limited cargo space. For example, Ford’s Fuel Cell Explorer weighs 1,000 lbs. more than a regular Explorer, and the Chevrolet Equinox Fuel Cell vehicle weighs about 500 lbs. over the standard Equinox – with aluminum doors and a carbon fiber hood. As a result, automakers are working on smaller fuel cells: Honda’s FCX Concept has a fuel cell that’s a hair larger than two computer towers, weighs less, delivers better performance and improved interior design.
