Any question regarding the performance of the X3 should be dispelled by the powertrain inside the new model. An aluminum and magnesium 3.0-liter inline six-cylinder engine, it delivers 260 horsepower at 6,600 rpm and 225 lb.-ft. of torque at 2,500 rpm. The 2006 model's 3.0-liter engine created a mere 225 horses and 214 lb.-ft. of torque. The engine is mated to a six-speed manual transmission; a six-speed automatic with Steptronic may be substituted. BMW claims 0-60 mph times of 6.9 seconds with the manual, 7.1 seconds with the automatic. BMW’s Dynamic Stability Control (DSC) is a standard feature and now includes Dynamic Traction Control (DTC), Brake Drying, Brake Standby for emergency applications, Start-off Assist and Brake Fade Compensation (BFC).
