2005 Ford Focus

IRVINE, CA -- While Europe receives an all-new Ford Focus derived from the same brand-new platform that serves as the basis for the new 2005 Mazda 3 and 2005 Volvo S40, Americans must make do with a warmed-over version of the existing model, which debuted in 2000. Despite its age, the Focus remains competitive, especially with the updates Ford is making for 2005.

On the outside, revised headlamps, grille, and a new front bumper fit in with an emerging Ford family "face." The hood and front fenders are also new, designed to look more upscale and substantial than before. Sedans also receive new taillights and a restyled rear bumper.

Inside, a new instrument panel rids the Ford Focus of its bizarre- and cheap-looking dashboard, providing a cleaner, more upscale appearance with no loss of the original car's excellent control interface. Most models can be equipped with two-tone interior color schemes for a richer cabin environment, and leather is available on higher trim levels. The seats are carryover from the old Focus, which is a shame, because many critics have faulted them for lack of comfort.
